Living with a shedding dog: what keeps the hair in check

Our teams clean up after about 230 dogs a month. What really keeps dog hair under control between cleanings, and which popular tricks barely help.

Minneapolis has a lot of dogs, and our teams vacuum up after roughly 230 of them a month. Here is what we have learned about keeping hair in check between visits.

What helps

  • Brushing the dog outside twice a week in spring and fall, when the undercoat lets go.
  • A washable cover on the dog’s favorite couch spot, washed every week.
  • A small cordless vacuum by the back door for a quick two-minute pass each night.
  • Slightly damp rubber gloves for pulling hair off upholstery.

What helps less than you’d think

Lint rollers on big surfaces, air purifiers for hair in particular (they help with dander, not tumbleweeds) and robot vacuums on long-pile rugs, which tend to wind hair around the brush roll.

What it means for your clean

Two or more shedding dogs add about 20 minutes to a standard clean, so we add $20. One dog is free. A husky counts as two.

Or let us handle it

One flat price per home size, two cleaners and every supply. First visits are usually four to six business days out.
