Why more cardiologists now look past basic cholesterol totals and count the particles that really matter.

If your last cholesterol panel was normal, that’s good news, but it may not be the whole story. LDL-C measures the cholesterol carried inside particles. ApoB counts the particles themselves, and it’s the particles that lodge in artery walls.
Why the two can disagree
Two people can share the same LDL-C and have very different ApoB. The one with more, smaller particles has more chances to push cholesterol into the vessel wall and carries meaningfully higher risk, even though a standard panel calls them equal.
And then there is Lp(a)
Lipoprotein(a) is mostly genetic, barely touched by diet and seldom tested. You only need it measured once in your life, but knowing it changes how hard everything else should be treated, which is why it is part of our Heart & Metabolic panel.
Get ApoB checked at least once. If it’s high, you have years of warning and a long list of things that help.
