Why Your Drain Is Slow: When Jetting Beats Snaking

A snake punches a hole through a clog. Jetting scrubs the whole pipe wall. Here’s when each one is the right call.

A slow drain has two common cures, and they aren’t interchangeable. A snake punches a hole through whatever is clogging the pipe so water can pass again. Jetting scrubs the pipe wall back to bare material. Picking the wrong one means either overpaying for a simple clog or clearing the same blockage every few months.

1. What a drain snake really does

A drain snake is a flexible cable fed down the line until it reaches the clog, then spun to break through it or hook it out. It’s quick, inexpensive and ideal for a single fixture clogged with hair, a flushed wipe or soap buildup. What it doesn’t do is remove the gunk coating the pipe around the hole it just made.

2. What hydro jetting does differently

Hydro jetting sends water down the line at high pressure through a nozzle that sprays backward as well as forward. That strips grease, scale and sludge off the pipe wall and flushes it away, restoring the full original diameter instead of a narrow channel through the middle of the clog.

3. Grease, roots and scale each need their own fix

Kitchen lines clogged with cooled grease are the clearest case for jetting — a snake slides right through soft grease and leaves the walls just as coated as before. Tree roots, common in older Clintonville sewer lines, usually need a cutting head first and jetting after.

A single bathroom drain clogged with hair, on the other hand, rarely justifies bringing a jetter to the house at all. Thirty seconds with a snake does it.

4. When jetting is a bad idea

Old clay, cast iron that has rusted thin, or any line with a known crack should be inspected before jetting. The pressure that scrubs a healthy pipe clean can blow open a weak one. A plumber who jets an unknown line without looking first is gambling with your floor.

“If the same drain clogs twice in a year, the first cleaning didn’t fail — it was the wrong method for what’s really in the pipe.”

5. Ask for a camera before you pick either one

A camera inspection takes a few minutes and settles the question for good. It shows whether you’re dealing with a soft clog, a hard scale layer, roots, a collapsed section or a slope that was laid wrong to begin with.

That last one matters most, because no amount of snaking or jetting fixes a pipe that doesn’t run downhill. Knowing which problem you have before paying for a cure is the whole point.
