How to Keep Your Drains Clear and Flowing

Simple habits that stop slow drains and clogs before they turn into an emergency service call.

Most clogged drains aren’t bad luck. They’re the result of a few months of small habits, and they give plenty of warning before they finally stop draining at all. Keeping them clear is mostly about what never goes down them in the first place, plus a few minutes each month.

1. Keep grease and oil out of the sink completely

Cooking grease pours as a liquid and sets as a solid somewhere down the line where it’s cold. Then it catches everything else that passes. Pour it into a can, let it harden and throw it in the trash — this one habit prevents more kitchen clogs than anything else on this list.

2. A strainer beats drain cleaner every time

A few dollars’ worth of mesh strainer in each sink, tub and shower catches hair, food and grit before it ever enters the pipe. Emptying one takes two seconds, and it’s far cheaper and far kinder to your pipes than any bottle from the hardware store.

3. Running hot water isn’t a flush

Running the hot faucet for a few seconds pushes grease farther down the pipe instead of removing it. A proper monthly flush is a full pot of very hot water poured steadily down the kitchen drain, ideally last thing at night when nothing else is running.

If you want to add something, a handful of baking soda followed by vinegar and then the hot water is fine. Skip caustic drain cleaners as routine maintenance — they eat at older pipes and seals, and they do nothing a good flush won’t.

4. Give bathroom drains one minute a week

Shower and sink drains clog with hair and soap scum, not grease, so they need a different habit. Lift the stopper, pull out what has collected, and run hot water for thirty seconds. Doing it weekly takes a minute; never doing it takes a plumber.

“A drain that’s started running slow isn’t a problem yet. It’s the only warning you’ll get before it turns into one.”

5. Pay attention to what a slow drain tells you

One slow fixture is a local clog and usually clears with a plunger or a hand auger. Several slow at once means the shared line downstream is restricted, and that’s a different job entirely — nothing you do at the drain opening will reach it.

Gurgling from a nearby drain when you empty a sink deserves attention too. It usually means air is being pulled through a trap because the line is partly blocked, and it tends to show up well before anything stops draining.
