For candidates

Questions worth asking at the end of an interview

Forget the questions you think you’re meant to ask. These four show whether you really want the job.

Ask about their predecessor

Ask what happened to the last person in the job. Promoted is a good sign. If nobody wants to answer, that’s an answer too.

Ask what success looks like at ninety days

A good manager will already have a view. A vague reply usually means the job hasn’t been properly defined yet.

And always ask what happens next

Ask when you’ll hear back and who from. It sets a clear expectation and tells you plenty about how organised they are.
