For candidates

Reading a job advert the right way

What the stock phrases actually mean, and three things to check before you apply.

Treat the requirements as a guide

Most adverts describe a perfect candidate who doesn’t exist. If you cover about two thirds of the list, including the core skills, apply.

Check for a salary and a named manager

A published salary and a named hiring manager are both good signs. They suggest the job is real, budgeted and well scoped.

Look at the posting date

An advert that has been live for months may be hard to fill for a reason. Ask your recruiter what’s going on.
