Swapping a washer, clearing a trap, replacing a toilet flapper — all fair game. The trouble is that jobs which look similar from the outside aren’t similar at all, and a few of them turn a small bill into a very large one the moment you start.

1. The shutoff valve won’t close all the way

Before any repair, the first test is whether you can actually stop the water. If the shutoff valve is stuck, weeping or only closes halfway, every job past it becomes a job you can’t undo. That’s the point to stop, because the valve itself is now the repair, and changing it means turning off the main.

2. You can’t tell where the water is coming from

Water travels along joists, under subfloors and down the outside of pipes before it shows up. A wet spot on a ceiling is rarely right under its source. If you can’t trace it to a fitting you can see and touch, cutting into the nearest surface is guesswork — and usually the wrong surface.

3. The fix involves a joint you’ll never see again

A compression fitting under a sink can be redone in a minute if it weeps. The same fitting buried in a wall can’t. Any joint that’s about to be covered by tile, drywall or concrete needs to be made by someone you can hold accountable, because testing it properly is a skill of its own.

The cost of getting that one joint wrong isn’t the joint. It’s the tile, the drywall and the drying-out afterward.

4. There’s gas involved

Anything connected to a gas line — a furnace, a gas water heater, a gas range being moved for a new sink — isn’t a DIY job in any situation, no matter how simple the plumbing side looks. In most Ohio cities it also takes a permit and a licensed, insured pro to do it.

“The real question isn’t whether you can make the repair. It’s what happens if it lets go at 3 a.m. while everyone is asleep upstairs.”

5. You’ve already fixed it twice

A repair that needs redoing within a few months was never the real fix. The faucet that keeps dripping after two new cartridges has a damaged seat. The drain that clogs every spring has something structural going on farther down the line.

At that point a third try costs more than a diagnosis. A plumber with a camera and a pressure gauge will find the actual cause in an hour, and you’ll spend less than you did on parts for tries one and two.

Some jobs really are a ten-minute fix.
